Open from mid-November to early January, it’s a magical mix of Christmas markets, circus shows, fairground rides, and Europe’s largest outdoor ice rink. It’s the perfect place to sip mulled wine, browse for gifts, or enjoy an evening out with friends or family. Be sure to book ahead—it’s always a popular choice.

For something a little different, head to Christmas at Kew, where the famous botanical gardens are transformed into a glittering wonderland. From 14 November through 4 January, a two-mile light trail leads you past glowing fountains, sparkling installations, and cosy food stalls. It’s a breathtaking experience for all ages, and one you’ll remember long after the lights dim.

Of course, simply wandering through the city is an event in itself. Oxford Street, Regent Street, and Covent Garden all shine with festive lights, while ice rinks and Christmas markets pop up across town. Add to that London’s rich line-up of seasonal theatre—think The Nutcracker, Elf the Musical, or A Christmas Carol—and you’ll never run out of ways to celebrate. And for something closer to us, don’t miss Hogwarts in the Snow at Warner Bros. Studios, just a short drive from Hatfield.

Getting Around with Ease

St Albans is a quick and easy 15 minute drive away from us at The Comet. Alternatively, thanks to Hatfield’s rail links, you can leave the car behind and hop on the train direct to St Albans City Station, right next to the park and cathedral. From the hotel it’s around a 30 minute stroll to the station, making days out blissfully straightforward.

Once you’re there, everything is walkable: Verulamium Park, the Market Place, Clock Tower, museums, cafés, pubs—the lot.

Historic Highlights & Green Spaces

Begin with Verulamium Park, a beautiful first-century Roman town site spanning over 100 acres. You’ll find pretty lakes, Roman walls, a mosaic-covered hypocaust, and plenty of peaceful places to sit and watch the ducks and swans.

Right beside the park is the Verulamium Museum, full of archaeological marvels—from Roman gold coins to intricate mosaics and interactive galleries. Don’t miss the nearby Roman theatre, the only known stage-style Roman theatre in Britain.

If you’re up for a climb, the Medieval Clock Tower stands proud above the High Street. With 93 steps and views across Hertfordshire on clear days, it’s a fun way to appreciate the city’s layered history. It’s open most weekends and bank holidays through September.

Events & Festivals to Catch

In early September (5–7), Pub in the Park arrives in Verulamium Park, hosted by chef Tom Kerridge. Expect live bands, food stalls from award‑winning eateries, and a fantastic festival atmosphere.

If you’re around the following weekend, look out for the St Albans & Harpenden Food & Drink Festival—a weekend of pop-up eateries, local drinks, live music and community spirit.

Later, from 24–27 September, St Albans Beer & Cider Festival brings thousands of drinks, street food, music, and good cheer at the Alban Arena. Maybe take the train for this one!

Pubs, Culture & Evening Ideas

St Albans allegedly claims more pubs per square mile than anywhere in the UK—even featuring Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, said to be one of the oldest pubs in England. It’s right beside the park—perfect for a pint after a walk.

For something different, catch a film at the beautifully restored Odyssey Cinema, a single-screen art‑deco gem just east of the cathedral.

If you’re into local arts, St Albans Museum + Gallery hosts contemporary art alongside historical exhibits—ideal for a quiet stroll indoors. 

So, whether you’re after Roman ruins, delicious festivals, market browsing, or riverside pubs with history, St Albans in August and September 2025 offers all this and more—and The Comet puts you in the perfect place to enjoy it.

 

 

Hatfield’s journey into aviation took flight in the 1930s when the de Havilland Aircraft Company relocated to the town. Founded by Sir Geoffrey de Havilland in 1920, this visionary company played a defining role in British aviation. Hatfield Aerodrome quickly became a hive of activity, serving as a centre for aircraft design, manufacturing, and testing. More than just a workplace, the aerodrome fostered a close-knit community of engineers, test pilots, and aviation pioneers who lived and breathed the thrill of flight. The keen eyed will find photographs of some of these Hatfield aviators adorning the walls of The Comet today. See if you can spot them!

First opening its doors in 1936, the original Comet Hotel was named for the locally built de Havilland Comet DH.88 racing aeroplane, which had been developed specifically for the 1934 England Australia MacRobertson Air Race. Having won this iconic race in a world record time, the Comet aeroplane was a true local hero, and an international legend. It represented the cutting edge of modern technology at time when the world was opening up thanks to international high speed travel. The eponymous hotel was actually designed around the footprint of the aircraft, which gives the building its unusual and iconic shape.

The building’s architectural style, known as Streamline Moderne, represents a late type of the Art Deco architecture and graphic design that emerged in the 1930s as response to the new optimism inspired by technology. The Comet Hotel reflects this concept in homage to the de Havilland Comet DH.88. It’s fascinating to think how many of Hatfield’s early aviation pioneer’s would have visited the original Comet Hotel and its bar on a daily basis. We hope think they would approve of what we have done with the place!

Several other legendary aircraft were brought to life in Hatfield, leaving a lasting legacy in aviation history. The de Havilland Mosquito, famously known as “The Wooden Wonder,” stood out as a game-changer during World War II. Crafted primarily from wood, this aircraft was remarkably fast and agile, excelling in reconnaissance and bombing missions. Then came the revolutionary de Havilland Comet DH.106, the world’s first commercial jet airliner. First introduced in 1949, the Comet DH.106 transformed air travel, setting the stage for the jet age with its unmatched speed and luxury. Though early setbacks challenged its journey, its innovations paved the way for modern aviation. Hatfield also played a continued crucial role in military aviation, producing aircraft like the Vampire and Venom, which advanced post-war jet technology.

Despite its golden era, Hatfield Aerodrome saw a gradual decline in the late 20th century. The de Havilland company merged with Hawker Siddeley in 1960 before eventually becoming part of British Aerospace. By 1994, the aerodrome had closed, marking the end of an aviation era. Today, the former site has been transformed into Hatfield Business Park, but the town’s deep-rooted connection to aviation remains strong and celebrated.

The de Havilland Aircraft Museum, just a short drive away, is a must-visit, showcasing an impressive collection of historic aircraft, including the legendary Mosquito and Comet. The museum incorporates Salisbury Hall, the birthplace of the Mosquito’s design. Set in picturesque surroundings, this historic site offers a glimpse into the ingenuity and determination behind one of WWII’s most iconic planes.
